Getting Started: Agriculture Structure & Crop Focus

Malawi's agriculture is predominantly subsistence-based, with 99% of cultivated land managed by smallholder farmers. Maize crops in Malawi

Maize is the primary crop, occupying 44% of arable land, yet yields are low at an average of 2 tons per hectare compared to the SADC region’s highest average of 23 tons per hectare. About 90% of arable land depends on rain-fed cultivation.

Agricultural Production and Markets

Malawi’s top agricultural products include 140,000 tons of tobacco, 7.5 million tons of sweet potatoes, 6.2 million tons of cassava, 3.7 million tons of maize, and 1.5 million tons of Irish potatoes. Malawis agricultural products

Only tobacco has a structured market, maize is primarily for domestic consumption, and the other crops face post-harvest losses estimated at nearly 50%. 

Land and Water Resources

Malawi encompasses 9.4 million hectares (ha) of land and 2.44 million ha of water. Of the 9.4 million ha, 5.65 million ha are arable. Currently, 4.29 million ha are under cultivation, leaving 1.36 million ha uncultivated. Only 0.42 million ha of cultivated land is irrigated.
