Agriculture/Agro-processing
Malawi being an agricultural based country; it has various investment opportunities in livestock production, aquaculture, horticulture, agro processing, sugar, honey production, integrated cotton development and cassava production.
Livestock Production
  • Improved breeds of cattle, artificial insemination, medications and extensions services
  • Feed growing and feed production , hay production through the growing of Rhodes gras
  • Manufacturing of cooling tanks and collection equipment ( i.e. Milk churms)
  • Service provision including artificial insemination, operation of dipping tanks and administration of drugs

Soya beans
Soya based products are used by bakeries, meat industry and animal feed manufacturers to increase the nutrition value of their feeds as well as shelf life of products. Investment opportunities offered are:
  • Processing soya into yoghurt, cheese, tofu, miso , candles, cattle feeds, bio diesel , cooking oil, meat substitutes and margarine for local and international markets.

Integrated Cotton Development
As part of diversification strategy from tobacco, Malawi has developed an integrated cotton industry which involves developing the industry across the value chain from seed multiplication to textile manufacturing in the following areas
  • Certified seeds , chemicals and fumigants and sprayers and contract farming
  • Large scale commercial farming
  • Setting up ginning , yarn and textile factories
  • Exporting processed cotton and textile products to USA under the AGOA trade agreement.

Fruits and Vegetables
Malawi boasts a wide variety of fruits and vegetables including oranges, tangerines, paw paws, guavas mangoes, avocado pears, pineapples, bananas tomatoes and onions.
Investment opportunities in this sector include:
  • Cold rooms and relevant transportation infrastructure
  • Processing factories for value addition to make puree , spices , paste and juices
  • Storage , cleaning and grading facilities
  • Large scale commercial farming
  • Market development and contract farming

Sugar production
Malawi is home to tall tropical south East Asian grass which has thick, solid, tough stems that are a chief commercial source of sugars. The sector offers the following opportunities:
Investment opportunities in this sector include:
  • Large scale production of sugarcane in the areas under the Green Belt Initiative (GBI)
  • Sugarcane processing facilities for export markets
  • Ethanol factories

Cassava Production
Cassava is a staple food in the lake –shore areas of Nkhotakota , Nkhatabay and Rumphi and other parts of Malawi as a security crop. It is a crop that tolerates drought conditions and has minimum labor requirements. The following are the opportunities this sector offers.
Investment opportunities in this sector include:
  • Large scale commercial farming along the lake Malawi
  • Starch and flour processing for domestic and industrial use
  • Manufacturing of certified clones and pest and disease control

Malawi aims to maintain and increase production of small and large scale fisheries for domestic and export markets. The main fish found in Lake Malawi ( the third largest fresh water lake in Africa) is the Tilapia, cat fish which are in great demand in Africa particularly in South- Africa, Europe and parts of Asia.
